Guide to Identifying Your Water Pipe Material

Step 1: Preparation
To complete this testing, you may need something to scratch the service line (a key, a coin, or a screwdriver) and a magnet (any magnet will work).

Step 2: Find Your Service Line
To identify where your service line enters your home or business, first find your water meter. This is generally located in your basement or in a crawlspace.

Step 3: Testing Service Line
Once you have found the water meter, follow the line to where it enters your home or business through either the floor or wall.

Water service lines can be constructed of many different materials but the most common are shown below:
